The Importance of Everyday

Posted by Joe Carmichael

piano.jpgAndre Previn said, “If I miss a day of practice, I know it. If I miss two days, my manager knows it. If I miss three days, my audience, knows it.”  He was talking about the piano, but the same is true about your devotional life. When you’re spending time with God on a consistent basis, it shows. When you aren’t, it also shows. You’ll see it first, then those closest to you, and, pretty soon, it’s obvious to everyone.

Paul said that you can be “transformed by the renewing of your mind…” (Romans 12:2) This renewal — this transformation — occurs during those quiet moments we spend in the presence of God, when we open scripture and open our hearts to what the Spirit would say to us.

I've been in pastoral ministry for almost 40 years and I've discovered that no matter what one accomplishes professionally in ministry, this time with God must remain a daily priority. If not...eventually everyone notices. However, I've also discovered that making this a priority has been a constant challenge for me. I can blame it on a hundred things...but when I get real honest about it, it comes down to my simply not viewing it with the same priority as say EATING. If Andre Previn needs to practice the piano every day to stay at his best, how much more do I need to practice the presence of God every day to stay at my best?

This is soooo true Joe! We have been out of town every weekend for the month of May and therefore haven't been to service in a while! I was really thinking how "disconnected" I felt and was ready to get back to service this past week. I needed it!

Have a great week!

Wow-thanks! Goes along with something Dustin said recently--do it out of imagination, not memory. I think those of us who have many years under our belts as Christians think we can just rely on memory, and not actually imaginatively practice our faith every day.
